About

What is Rachel's Vineyard?

Rachel’s Vineyard is a healing ministry for those who are suffering from the trauma of abortion(s) or have been closely connected to someone who is; this includes siblings, grandparents, aunts etc. We recognise that abortion impacts the wider family and community.

We also support those that have worked in the abortion industry and subsequently regret the part they have played in abortion decisions.

Our retreats offer a unique sensory based treatment which integrates emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions.

The healing journey uses creative “Living Scripture Exercises” which engage the mind, body and soul. The Living Scriptures coupled with group activities, therapeutic facilitation, cognitive restructuring and discussion offers an effective process for grief work grounded in biblical principles. This unique program provides a safe and effective recovery process for anyone suffering after an abortion experience, regardless of religious preference or personal beliefs.

Founded in the United States in 1994 by Theresa Burke, the Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat model has spread to many countries across the world, including our retreats in England and Scotland.

Rachel

The name "Rachel" refers to an old testament figure who was written about in the Bible.

Thus says the Lord: "In Ramah is heard the sound of moaning, of bitter weeping! Rachel mourns her children, she refuses to be consoled because her children are no more. Cease your cries of mourning, wipe the tears from your eyes. The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward, says the Lord." (Jeremiah 31:15-16)

The Vineyard

There are many images attached to a vineyard. It is a place where grapes are grown, pruned, lifted up and cleansed so they can bear a more bountiful harvest. Perhaps the most significant association with vine comes from the powerful and moving words of Jesus found in Chapter 15 of the Gospel of John:

"I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me."

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." (Revelation 21:4)
